26th National Conference of the Indian Association of Surgical Gastroenterologists

I was delighted to participate as invited faculty at the 26th National Conference of the Indian Association of Surgical Gastroenterologists (IASGCON 2026), held in Bhubaneswar. The conference brought together experienced surgeons, academic leaders, and young professionals to exchange knowledge and discuss advances in surgical gastroenterology.

During the conference, I had the privilege of chairing two academic sessions. The first focused on esophageal surgery, featuring an insightful presentation by Dr. T. K. Chattopadhyay, a pioneer in esophageal cancer surgery in India, who shared his extensive experience spanning three decades. The session also explored the role of minimally invasive techniques in improving recovery after major esophageal procedures.

The second session focused on colorectal cancer, covering emerging blood-based tests that may support treatment decisions and follow-up, as well as Lynch syndrome, an inherited condition associated with an increased risk of certain cancers. The discussions highlighted the importance of integrating genetics, pathology, oncology, and surgical expertise into comprehensive cancer care.

An important highlight was the hands-on workshop for postgraduate students, where I demonstrated pancreaticojejunostomy on an animal model. The workshop provided an opportunity to support surgical skill development and contribute to the training of future surgeons.

It was also encouraging to see greater participation from younger surgeons, reflecting a positive step towards creating more opportunities for academic exchange and professional growth within the specialty.

I extend my sincere thanks to the conference organisers and fellow faculty members for an engaging academic programme and warm hospitality. Special appreciation goes to Dr. Brahmaatta Patnaik for his role in making the conference a success.

IASGCON 2026 was a valuable opportunity to learn from experienced colleagues, share knowledge, and return with renewed motivation to advance surgical practice, research, and education.
