Dr. Dinesh Ramaswamy recently delivered an insightful educational session at the IMA Kodambakkam meeting on “The Gut Never Lies – GI Red Flags Every Doctor Should Recognise.” The session focused on identifying gastrointestinal symptoms that may appear routine but can indicate serious underlying conditions requiring early diagnosis and timely intervention.

Using seven real-world clinical scenarios, Dr. Dinesh highlighted commonly overlooked presentations, including dysphagia mistaken for acidity, colon cancer presenting in different forms, unexplained weight loss with new-onset diabetes, painless jaundice, persistent vomiting, abdominal pain disproportionate to clinical examination, and Charcot’s triad. To help clinicians remember these warning signs, he introduced the simple ABCD approach:

• A – Anaemia
• B – Bleeding / Bowel habit change
• C – Can’t swallow / Cancer-related weight loss
• D – Dark urine / Disproportionate pain

The session encouraged interactive discussions among medical professionals and reinforced the importance of recognizing early gastrointestinal red flags.
